So, kids, let me tell you a story about how metal was played in 1985. Actually, you know what, let me play you this... What are you saying? You've heard it all before, but sometimes the simplest recipes prove to be the best? I don't disagree. In their beginnings, Bullet mixed 80% of Accept with 20% of AC/DC, seasoned it all with some Maiden, Priest and '80s metal in general and put out their debut album "Heading for the Top", which was very well received, even though it didn't bring anything new to the scene. Fast forward 12 years and 4 full-length releases and we get "Dust to Gold". Have they updated the recipe or added any new spices? Not really. Will you find any surprises here? Not really. The Swedes have never been very original, they have rarely tried experimenting, but they surely are as sincere in what they do as it gets and "Dust to Gold" is yet another release where you can clearly hear that their hearts are beating for old-school metal. The tunes are very short and to the point, no weird scales in the solos, some twin leads here and there, gang choruses Accept-style, they've done it all before and they're doing it again. Hell Hofer's screechy vocals are loved by some and hated by the others (pretty much like Udo's) but they fit the band's style perfectly. There are a few fast songs on the album, including the opener "Speed and Attack", "Screams in the Night" and "Hollow Grounds", while the rest is mostly moderately tempoed with the usual dose of foot-stomping catchiness sprinkled all over the place. All in all, "Dust to Gold" is nothing more than another typical addition to the bands catalogue, but if you listen to this album and have anything negative to say about it, you surely don't like heavy metal.
