White Wizzard Infernal Overdrive cover
It took Jon Leon five long years to write and record material for a new album, but I'm sure all fans will unanimously agree that it was worth the wait, as "Infernal Overdrive" is undoubtedly the finest White Wizzard's record so far. With the revolving doors of band members being something WW have been always known for, the new release sees the return of the singer Wyatt Anderson and the axeman James J. LaRue (who last shredded on the famous "High Speed GTO" EP), yet the new material has little in common with the band's early style. Well, you can maybe catch some echoes of the past in the melodic "Pretty May" with Maiden touches present here and there again ("Storm the Shores", "Voyage of the Wolf Raiders"), but it seems that instead of just writing straight forward tunes with highly memorable choruses, Jon decided to focus more on the complexity and the overall quality of the song-writing (not that there was anything wrong with the early material). So, the new songs are twisted, more progressive than ever, with amazingly satisfying rhythm section parts and great guitar work throughout, including inspiring riffs (do I hear Voivod in "Critical Mass"?), jazzy soloing, fast arpeggios and cool harmonies. On top of that, Wyatt's vocals are hands down among the best he's ever recorded, proving that his nickname "Screaming Demon" is well earned. Taking all that into consideration one could wonder why Jon decided to split-up the band soon after the release of such a quality album. But whatever his reasons were, let's just hope he'll still change his mind and we'll see White Wizzard come back in a couple of years, as the metal world really needs more releases as strong as "Infernal Overdrive".
